Malaysian Media and Culture 05

Before the semester start, tbh I have no idea what to learn for the subject. I assumed we have to learn about those histories of the media companies like media prima, TV3 all those kind of things. I still remember during the first class, we were asked to write 'what do you expect to learn in this class'. I was like totally blank as I didn't think about it seriously before.

Throughout the semester, I've learned a lot of things that I never paid so much attention to it before. I'm not so artistic person and seldom focus on 'artworks'. My friends, Shir Jing and Jing Yee are those performance art people as they joined drama club since their high school time. Because of them, I did watch a few stage plays with them together and I found stage plays are quite interesting and have their very different ways of expressing compared to films. During the Yayasan Sime Darby Art Festival, I really felt happy that we actually have a chance to visit such fun events and the performances are just so amazing. The atmosphere at KLPAC was so lively and I can feel the happiness of the people around me. And also the first field trip to the National Art Museum, to be really honest, I think I would never visit the place if we didn't go on the field trip. That was the first time I looked into artworks, defined my own interpretation through the artworks and it was surprisingly fun.

The most amazing part of this class is the round table (?) discussion, the inner circle and outer circle discussion was so fun and we get to speak out our opinion and listen to others' opinion where we may never think of. The questions asked are always some questions that 'normally I would not think of to find out the answer, but after bringing out I found that it is worth to think about' type of questions. (Sorry about my grammar, Im abit confused what imma saying now lollll)

To sum up this, I would say it is a really fun class and I learned a lot from our lecturers and classmates and a sincere thank you to all of you. Sorry for being late sometimes, I didn't mean to be late but I always overslept.....)

PS:
(Although this class is really really fun, I hope I can pass and don't retake tho hahaha)

Review on Interactive Drum Performance - Drum Simfoni

Drum Simfoni
Established in 2007, Drum Simfoni is a drum and percussion group which consists of 9 members specialising in African Drumming, Brazilian Batucada, and Latin Rhythm. They have performed on TV programmes such as Nasi Lemak Kopi O, Malaysia Hari Ini, and Selamat Pagi Malaysia.
An absolute crowd favourite at YSDAF, Drum Simfoni’s interactive drum performances will require audience participation. The group will also be running a group drumming workshop during the festival.

This music performance is an interactive drum performance where the performers will demonstrate the lyrics and rhyme that they wanted the audiences to sing along when they cue the audiences. They are using their hands to tap on the drums to create different rhyme and music. When they are performing, the audiences are so concentrate on the performance as the performers have their special charisma to make the audiences enjoy and focus on them.

For me, I personally really like and enjoy this performance so so much. At first when they are setting up, I was like 'uh I'm not so interested in music tho', and I plan to go to the other places, but then when they start their performance, it actually does attract me and then I stay there for the whole performance. When they are performing, the interaction between the artists and the audiences are so harmony and warm, the simple lyrics are given as a 'task' for the audiences and most of us are participating in it with full enjoyment.

I found it so miraculous that a simple interactive performance can lighten up my day. I'm not an artistic person and not so paying attention to art but after this performance, I feel like I'm a little bit interested in interactive performance.

Review on Mana-manalogues: Tangan Kiri Ayah

Tangan Kiri Ayah
"Written and directed by Fasyali Fadily and performed by Fadhli Masoot, Tangan Kiri Ayah made its premier in 2006 and have since been performed in several events in Kuala Lumpur. The play tells a story of Alim, who lives with his disabled father, and the love of a man in raising and supporting his family regardless his disability."
In the play, Alim is living with his family who is working as fisherman and farmer. His father is disabled as his left hand is cripple. Although Alim's father is disabled, he works very hard to raise his children and to let them have a proper education. People always say that Alim's father is disabled, but Alim didn't feel so. He thinks that his father is strong and can have done all the fishing, working even with only one hand. However, Alim couldn't understand why his father needs to work so hard in order to get them educated at first, he only wants to help his father in his works so that his father would not suffer so much. There is one time when Alim followed his father to work, his father fell into the sea and nearly drowned, Alim pulls very hard to save his father from being drowned. After this incident, Alim was very worried if he is not with his father every time he goes to work, what would have happened. Therefore, he decided to follow his father every time and his mother praised that he is the 'tangan kiri ayah'.

I really like this play because the performer is very good at showing the emotions and the audiences are all attracted by the play. Although there is only one performer for the whole play, it is not boring because his way of performance is really deep and infectant. The play also reminds me how a father loves his family and I believes all fathers love their children like Alim father does. No matter how hard is life, parents will always give their best to us. When I was watching the play, I have eyes contact with him and I can really feel his helpless when he is saving his father from drowning.

This play also shows how a child loves his father no matter what others comment on him. When all other people are commenting on you, looking down on you, there is always family behind you. Family will not follow how other people looking down on you, because the one who loves us the most in the Earth is always our family.
